Drupal (Content Management System)It has been 8 years of formidable growth, heavy weight followership and a very robust history for this very highly acclaimed " Open Source Content Management System(CMS)".Drupal, unlike others has been associated with big names from very early on when community sites were relatively unknown and they were few and far between.Drupal is written in PHP and uses Mysql for its database. There is a core for Drupal which is developed and maintained by its administrator. There are various addons available to work on the core and to increase the feature list for this already very feature rich Content Management System ( CMS).
Why should you ask the developer to use Drupal? It does simplify the process of building big websites which would otherwise cost 10 times more then what it would cost using Drupal. Drupal is currently used for heavy traffic, high volume portals, community websites which is because it has integrated with it most of the features which are required to run the sites. What it means is that it has most of the features needed to build big sites already in it. Many developers working on it mean that you are not left in a tight spot when any problems arise. It is pretty secure in its operation and so of course, no nightmares after you get up from your sleep.
Our relationship with Drupal has been for years over which it has matured quite a bit and has also provided us , as developers to get a real hold of the technicalities of the system. Although it is perhaps one of the most powerful Content Management Systems out there, it is not without its shortcomings The templating and hence the overall look of a site is not something to boast about. You cannot expect a non/half programmer to run the site or make modifications as the learning curve with Drupal is steep. The time required to develop a basic site in Drupal is not justified as others can do the same much faster. So basically the cost of getting your site done in Drupal is justified only if your site has quite a few features and is aspiring to have many people on the site.
In our experience, if you are looking for a site with 1000 members or above at a time, Drupal is a strong contender in those circumstances. Drupal, however is not suitable for basic sites or sites which rely highly on graphical elements.
